Hvar Island is covered with vineyards
and olive groves and is surrounded by a translucent cobalt sea.
With the arrival of the Croats in the Middle Ages, Hvar
achieved renown and power as an important port and part of the Venetian
marine empire. Under Venetian rule, Hvar grew rich exporting wine, figs and
fish. Despite social and political changes through the years, the island has
kept its artistic activity, and, with the exception of Dubrovnik, the island
was the greatest Left of early Croatian literature, architecture,
sculpture, painting and music.

Pier Information
Guests will be taken ashore via the ship's tenders to the Hvar Harbour
Pier. The town Left is a short walk from the landing site. Taxis are
not generally available at the pier but are in town. |
Shopping
In the Left of town you can purchase items representative of the area,
which include wine, lavender oil, olive oil, and jewelry. Normal
shopping hours are from 7 to noon and 4 to 9. |
Cuisine
Pizza and pasta are popular items on local menus. Fresh seafood is also
a good choice and figures prominently on any menu. |
Other Sights
Crvene Stijene (Red Rocks). Five miles east of Hvar lies an
unusual and picturesque natural phenomenon. Layers of limestone
interspersed with reddish breccia were lifted up in some distant
geological past. The soft beccia layers were washed away by rain and the
sea, leaving vertical red-coated hollows.
Pakleni Otoci. A group of about 20 charming islets situated
opposite the town of Hvar, this is a beautiful and unique spot. The
islands are small, partially wooded, with gravel and sandy beaches. The
area beckons to naturists. |
